Man At Risk Of Dying After Being Hit By Car In Ħamrun

Yesterday, at around 1800hrs, police were informed of a traffic accident which took place in Triq il-Kbira San Ġużepp, Ħamrun.

Police convened immediately on site and preliminary investigations showed that a man, whose identity is not yet known, was hit by a Toyota Ractis driven by a 61 year old woman resident of Ħaż-Żebbuġ.

The man was given medical aid and transported to Mater Dei Hospital. He was later certified as having suffered serious injuries.

An inquiry has been opened and investigations are ongoing.

Love Island UK Couple Spotted In Malta

Love Island UK couple Jessie Renee Wynter and Farmer Will were spotted in Malta, with the couple uploading social media content whilst on holiday on the Mediterranean island.

The two shared a TikTok video documenting their trip making their way to Malta from the airport.

The photos shared on Instagram showcase some of Malta’s most popular tourist locations and many of the island’s stunning views.

The two were on Love Island UK Season 9, which broadcasted on 16th January 2023, and was the second winter edition of the series.

44 Little Turtles Hatch From Golden Bay Nest

The first turtle nest discovered at Golden Bay on 15/06/24 has fully hatched after three days of hatching.

Yesterday, the nest was excavated by ERA, Nature Trust Malta (NTM), and a qualified veterinarian to assess its status.

A total of 44 turtles successfully hatched, marking the first hatching of what promises to be a record-breaking season, with seven more nests expected in the coming weeks.

Darrin Stevens, Director for Environment & Resources, emphasized the significance of this event, stating, “This hatching is a vital reminder of the crucial role played by dedicated NTM volunteers and ERA officials in their conservation efforts.

Their collaboration in protecting this endangered species is invaluable. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all volunteers and remind the public to always respect wildlife and their habitats while enjoying our beautiful beaches.”

The public is urged to exercise extra caution near the nests during this sensitive period. If present during a hatching event, it is important to avoid using lights or flashes and to keep noise to a minimum.

ERA also expresses gratitude to the public and volunteers for their cooperation and efforts this season. ERA continues to support NTM in conducting animal rescues and rehabilitation across the Maltese islands.

‘Are You Ready? I Am’: Edward Johnston’s Reported Last Words

Edward William Johnston, a 50-year-old Irish man, was shot dead by police after a three-hour standoff.

According to sources informing Times of Malta, his final words, captured on bodycam footage, were: “Are you ready? Because I am.” Johnston had pointed a replica gun at police, leading them to believe he was about to fire.

Police shot him three times, as they believed his gesture and words indicated an imminent threat, especially after they were informed he had just killed his ex-partner, Nicolette Ghirxi, who was found stabbed to death.

Johnston’s actions and movements on the night of the incident suggest he may have been seeking “suicide by cop.”

Times of Malta revealed that earlier he had threatened a bartender with the same replica gun, demanding a beer. Police first encountered Johnston at the Hilton Hotel, where he jumped into the sea and held the gun to his head.

Despite hours of negotiations, Johnston refused to surrender, ultimately provoking the police to shoot by pointing the gun at them.

Johnston had a history of confrontations with the police, including a previous incident in Glasgow involving a bomb threat. His ex-partner had reported him to the police multiple times for harassment, but she did not initially believe her life was in danger.
