A 35-year-old man resident of Ħaż-Żebbuġ was arrested after allegedly attempting to drive over police officers after failing to stop during traffic control occurring at Triq l-Imdina, Ħ’Attard.

At around 2330hrs on 29th March 2023, police signalled to a driver who was seemingly driving a Ford Transit with a suspected expired license date.

Despite the signal to stop, the driver increased the vehicle’s speed in the direction of police, who had to evade the oncoming vehicle so as not to get hit.

The police chased the driver after circling him in Triq Ħ’Attard, Ħaż-Żebbuġ. At this point, the driver seemed to be throwing something out of the car, which later turned out to be a firearm.

The driver resisted arrest but was subdued and arrested by the police officers. Following a search, the police found a container with a white substance suspected to be cocaine.

A later search in a Birkirkara resident and the residence of the arrested man in Ħaż-Żebbuġ led to the discovery of more white substance suspected to be cocaine, as well as heroin, cannabis, a large scale weight, a large knife with a blade 45cm in length and various bullets of different calibre.

The man is being held in the Floriana Police lockup for further investigations as police continue with the case.
