Man arrested after calling ex-wife 300 times over period of 13 days

A 44-year-old man from Imtarfa has been arrested after pleading not guilty to accusations of harassment for calling his ex-wife 300 times over a period of 13 days.

The man was accused of harassment on his ex-wife multiple times, with the defense led by lawyer Patrick Valentino contesting the validity of the arrest.

Police Inspector Eman Heyman notified the Police of reports made by the woman who recently left home after ending her relationship with her ex-husband, who would repeatedly call her to meet for coffee. After agreeing to meet, the accused took the woman to a different place than discussed and started drinking alcohol, stating that she was taken to an isolated place where the man tried to make unwanted advances, to which the woman refused.

The woman also reported that the man would go to her workplace. It was revealed that the woman would receive treatment due to a drug addiction, stating that here problem was that the accused would not leave her alone. The court ruled that the man remain under arrest and that the names in the case would not be revealed.

During a press conference held at the Nationalist Party headquarters on Thursday, PN candidate Ivan Bartolo together with Chief spokesperson Peter Agius stated that the PN will work hand in hand with voluntary organisation to ensure that enough space is made in temporary shelters across Malta & Gozo.

Highlighting the fact that there are over three hundred people in the waiting list awaiting a roof on their heads, Bartolo praised organisations like YMCA and Caritas for the effort being made to tackle homelessness in Malta, going on to state that the party will take care of these people too.

It was highlighted that a government led by the Nationalist Party will help individuals in social accommodation by giving them the opportunity to become owners of their own home, providing affordable residence through work and new obligations in development in the private sector.

After a meeting with Malta’s teachers’ unions, Prime Minister Robert Abela has sustained the Labour Party’s promise to move towards an academic framework where homework is not required.

The Prime Minister held that he and his party will commit to debate on a “national level” with regards to the distribution of homework and students’ free time. At yesterday’s Labour Party event, Abela highlighted that it is important for youth, especially at a young age, to participate in extra-curricular activities and the homework decision may be backed by that.

Reiterating that education is one of the Labour Party’s main pillars going into the general election, Abela also pledged to see to the installation of air conditioning systems in schools across Malta and Gozo, calling it an “extensive investment” in modernising the country’s classroom.

Reacting to Robert Abela’s recent comments that 16-year-olds should eventually be able to represent their country in parliament, Minister for Inclusion, Social Wellbeing and Voluntary Organisations Hon. Julia Farrugia Portelli told Malta Daily that she is in agreement with the Prime Minister.

Farrugia Portelli stated that it was one of the policies which was pushed during the Vote 16 pilot project, which allows citizens of 16 years of age to vote in local and European elections. The Minister highlighted that Maltese youths were amongst the first in Europe to be able to vote at 16.

She stated that she looks forward to furthering this conversation and sending a strong message of a reformist country with youth as front-liners.
