Charlton Mifsud, a haulier from Mqabba, was remanded in custody on Sunday after allegedly assaulting three police officers at the Sliema police station. The incident occurred Friday evening when Mifsud and his father were summoned regarding a dangerous driving report.
Upon arrival, Mifsud reportedly caused a disturbance by shouting and banging on a perspex screen. When officers attempted to calm him and requested his personal details, he refused and allegedly became violent. In the ensuing struggle, one officer sustained a fractured wrist while the other two suffered minor injuries.
Mifsud was charged with threatening and injuring the officers, resisting arrest, and grievously injuring one constable. He pleaded not guilty but was denied bail due to the serious nature of the offences and concerns about tampering with evidence.
The court also noted his history of similar offences, including drug-related crimes. His lawyer argued that Mifsud had been manhandled by the officers, but the court remained firm on its decision.
This incident follows another recent assault on police officers, prompting calls for harsher penalties for such crimes.
