‘Mal-Melodija’ Project Brings Maltese Literature to Life Through Music

Mar 14 2025 Share

The ‘Mal-Melodija’ project was launched last year to bring Maltese students closer to Maltese literature beyond the classroom by integrating it with music.

The project recently reached its peak with a special event organised by the Maltese Language Centre—a concert-lesson performed by the group Kantera for five Year 8 classes at San Benedittu College Middle School.

Present for this celebration of Maltese language, folklore, music, art, and culture were Minister for National Heritage, Arts, and Local Government Owen Bonnici and Permanent Secretary Kevin Mahoney.

Minister Bonnici explained that ‘Mal-Melodija’ started as a pilot project to merge two key cultural elements—Maltese literature and music. Now, it has become an integral part of the Maltese curriculum. He emphasised how the initiative helps students appreciate literature and music while strengthening cultural identity and fostering creativity.

Maris Camilleri, Acting CEO of the Maltese Language Centre, highlighted that the project is expanding beyond literature into language itself, making learning more interactive and engaging for students with different abilities and interests.

Charmaine Pisani Grixti, Head of Kirkop Middle School, expressed pride in being the first school to participate, as students experienced Maltese poetry in a more immersive way. The initiative will now extend to other schools.
