Maltese work on pandemic praised by senior WHO Official

Malta’s health authorities and front-liners were praised for their work and sacrifices by Hans Kluge, a senior WHO official. Kluge took to Twitter to praise the hard labour going into mitigating the spread of the virus and taking control of the situation.

Adding that the vaccinations will reduce further deaths caused by the pandemic, Kluge applauds the sacrifices calling them heroic and even praises Chris Fearne’s leadership in rolling out the vaccines.

Two thirds of COVID-19 patients on ventilator at ITU

Dr Carmel Abela, chairman of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Department, has stated on an interview with Television Malta that two thirds of COVID-19 patients at the Intensive Care Unit end up on a ventilator. When an infection in the lung is potent enough to restrain the patient from respirating, the ventilator is necessary to keep them alive.

With around 16 to 20 patients with COVID-19 at Mater Dei’s ITU, and their age averaging around 57, doctors are trained to treat patients who are in the most critical condition. The patient is kept asleep through anaesthesia as the procedure is carried out.

Claire Azzopardi with another excellent athletic performance

Athlete Claire Azzopardi has managed to achieve another personal best as she competes in the European Athletics Indoor Championships happening in Torun, Poland with her recent jump of 5.51m. Azzopardi has already achieved title of 2019’s Athlete of the Year after winning the Silver Medal and boasting the national record in the Triple Jump.

Andy Grech, President of Athletics Malta expressed his satisfaction with Azzopardi’s performance as a milestone in Maltese sports in general, with Claire heralding the way forward. Athletic Malta’s schedule of Winter Championships for Under 14 are set to continue today in Marsa, with more athletes competing and travelling to carry the torch forward.

Hugo Chetcuti’s legacy commemorated on his 55th birthday

Today would have been Hugo Chetcuti’s 55th birthday, the entrepreneur owner of various eatery establishments but also a beloved family man. Chetcuti was stabbed on 7th July 2018 by a Serbian man, after having invited some relatives and managers to sample the menu of a new seafood restaurant he was opening.

Luke Chetcuti, Hugo’s son, took to social media to commemorate his late father’s memory, calling him his hero. All Hugo’s establishments also commemorated the pioneer’s memory and his many achievements. Lawyers are still waiting for jury trial in regards to Hugo’s murder as COVID-19 delays further proceedings.
