Joe Cutajar, a beloved Maltese singer, has passed away, as announced by his brother Frank on Facebook this Thursday. He was 83 years old.
Born and raised in Valletta, Cutajar’s legacy shines brightly, notably for his memorable performance alongside Helen Micallef in the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest, where they mesmerized audiences with their rendition of “L-Imħabba.”
With a career spanning several decades, Cutajar’s voice graced stages across the globe, including a stint as a cabaret artist in London’s vibrant West End during the 1960s. His talents also extended to the realm of rock opera, where he showcased his skills as one of the soloists in the renowned production, Ġensna.
Despite the passage of time, Cutajar’s passion for music remained undiminished, with his singing continuing until just a few months ago.
Mark Spiteri Lucas, a fellow singer and songwriter, expressed the sentiment shared by many, acknowledging Cutajar’s immense contribution to Malta’s music scene. “He was among those who contributed a great deal to local spectacle. Rest in peace and thank you,” he wrote.
