Maltese tugboat worker who has been assisting in the stranded Chem P tanker operation off the coast of Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq has given an update on the situation.

Kenneth Grima told national broadcaster TVM that the operation is delicate and complex, outlining that a number of complications have emerged during the operation, including bad weather, difficult conditions and great tension. Grima went on to state that the tanker is holding on two anchors as the tugboats tied to it through wire ropes continue to attempt to stabilise the situation, going on to praise the Tug Malta staff for their essential role in such an operation.

“All of us had other plans for the weekend, however everyone shouldered responsibility and faced the bad weather to make sure that this incident will not go down as a tragedy in the country’s history,” he stated.

A jetty in Birzebbuga will be regenerated into an open public space with a specified swimming zone, deck and stair access.

The area, which is often recognised as the ‘Shell’ jetty is 180 metres long and its regeneration will cost up to €4 million, Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli has revealed. Dalli explained that during the first phases of the process, the structure will be transformed into a pedestrian area with a number of facilities, with further works to include the removal of the fuel and concrete infrastructure.

A 1,500 square metre structure will be built to form part of the pedestrian zone and the government will present an application to the Planning Authority, along with a consultation process with the Environment and Resource Authority to ensure that no damage is done to the maritime environment.

The minister has stated that the area is a landmark and that she will ensure such a zone is given back to the public, serving as a step forward towards a Birzebbuga ‘everyone deserves’.
