Maltese swimmers achieve several records in Slovakian Grand Prix

The Maltese Swimming team achieved several milestones in Slovakia during swimming Grand Prix. The second day of the competition saw several national records being established by Maltese athletes in the respective age groups.

Thomas Wareing established the new national record in the individual medley with a time of 4:37.71, beating the record he himself established in August 2020. Maya Galea established the new record in Age Group D in the 200m Breastroke whilst Sasha Gatt established a time of 16:53:34 in the 1500m Freestyle. And last but not least, Michela Portelli achieved a record in the 100m Butterfly for Age Group C with a time of 1:06.84.

Fines issued to organisers of Ħamrun tombla event

The organisers of the tombla event in Ħamrun last weekend have been fined after being in clear breach of COVID-19 regulations.

Transport Malta officials, health officials and members of the Malta Police Force were called onto the scene at the Valentine Hall in Ħamrun, one hour into a 60-person-strong event with the majority of attendees being elderly individuals.

Particular attendees expressed their disappointment with officials halting the event stating that ‘it’s not like we killed someone’ and ‘let us live our lives in the few days we have left’.

12 people fined after Hamrun celebrations, investigations continue

Police have issued fines to 12 people who were identified as having participated in the celebrations happening in Hamrun last Saturday. Police continued its investigations to identify more participants who were involved. The spontaneous celebrations happened after Hamrun Spartans beat Hibernians in the Premier League.

The majority of celebrations occurred near Hamrun football ground, with a large mass of Hamrun residents converging on the spot. The mass gathering occurred after the authorities issued new COVID-19 measures so as to mitigate the virus and the UK variant. Fines have doubled for those caught breaking the regulations.

Masks to be worn at all times; several fined for eating & drinking in public

Over the weekend, several individuals raised concerns about receiving fines for eating in public following the national COVID-19 conference on 4th March.

Following confirmation for the Health Ministry, it is understood that it is prohibited to remove one’s mask for activities such as eating, drinking or smoking whilst in a public place and engaging in such acts is eligible for penalisation.

A number of fines were issued as measures are to remain in place until 11th April, as stated in the national conference.
