Over the past weekend, Malta witnessed a groundbreaking moment in karting history as 11-year-old Benjamin Westwood clinched victory at the ROK Winter Trophy.

Benjamin, affiliated with the GP racing team in Italy and under the management of Minardi management, achieved this remarkable feat amidst stiff competition from 44 contenders in the mini category.

Racing for the KPL racing team in Malta since the age of eight, Benjamin’s win at the ROK Winter Trophy carries significant prestige, given the fierce competition primarily from drivers based and racing in Italy, a central hub for karting worldwide.

This event serves as a crucial platform for identifying young talents for future motorsports opportunities, including Formula 1.

Despite facing engine troubles during qualifying, which relegated him to starting from P18 in all heats, Benjamin’s unwavering determination prevailed.

He navigated through each obstacle with resilience, ultimately emerging victorious. Benjamin’s triumph not only underscores his exceptional talent and skill but also highlights the invaluable support of GP Karts Official and his dedicated mechanic, Kevin, who stood by him through every challenge.

Data presented in parliament on Monday revealed that in 2023, a total of 27 individuals died by suicide. Of these, 24 were men and three were women.

Health and Active Aging Minister Jo Etienne Abela furnished this information in response to a parliamentary inquiry by Nationalist MP Graziella Attard Previ.

Previ sought detailed data on suicides, including gender and age distribution, month by month.

The figures disclosed that the highest incidence of suicides occurred in September and October, with four men taking their lives each month. Among the deceased, 14 men were under the age of 45, while two of the three women were in the same age bracket.

Seven men and one woman were aged between 45 and 64, with three men aged over 65. Abela also addressed another question by Attard Previ, revealing two suicides involving individuals under 18 years old.

Additionally, Abela provided an overview of suicide statistics in Malta over the past 11 years, noting the highest count in 2021 with 35 cases and the lowest in 2019 with 21 suicides. Similarly, in 2022, there were 27 suicides recorded, mirroring the figures from the preceding year.
