A photo sent to ‘It-Temp Madwarna’ by Joseph Sciberras shows the moment Mount Etna erupted, with a massive plume emerging from the mouth of the Sicilian volcano.

Many tourists had to quickly evacuate the area close to the volcano’s more active area as others snapped photos and videos from afar.

According to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the volcano is experiencing strong and almost continuous Strombolian eruptions.

Etna, located in eastern Sicily, is among the most closely watched volcanoes globally due to its frequent activity. While its eruptions are often spectacular, they can also pose risks to those living near or visiting the area.

Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, addressed the opening of a seminar held under the PROMISE project, a European research initiative focused on improving the reliability, operation, and maintenance of photovoltaic (PV) systems in Malta.

PROMISE is a three-year research and innovation project funded by the European Commission through a Twinning action (HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-ACCESS-03), part of the Widening Participation and Spreading Excellence objective under the Horizon Europe programme. Twinning actions aim to strengthen ties between research institutions in less-represented EU countries and leading institutions across Europe.

During the seminar, participants engaged in hands-on analysis of PV systems and explored the broader potential of solar energy.

Azzopardi Tanti emphasized that the PROMISE project is a reflection of Malta’s strong commitment to science and innovation as key drivers of national growth and sustainability.
