Birkirkara Beat Breznica In Yet Another Iconic Champions League Match

Sep 5 2024 Share

Birkirkara have etched yet another UEFA Women’s Champions League win into their long and successful history in the women’s game.

The Stripes managed to overcome tough opposition in Montenegrin side Breznica, with a score of 2-1 also needing extra-time to get the win over the line.

This is the second year in a row that the Maltese side has beaten Breznica, also coming out triumphant against them in last year’s edition.

The first goal of the match came against the run of play, with Breznica scoring the opener despite Birkirkara having most of the possession of the ball.

The match remained 1-0 to Breznica for a long time but everything changed once the Breznica central defender Aleksandra Vujosevic received a second yellow card and was therefore sent off.

Birkikara capitalized immediately through  Japanese midfielder Hazekawa who scored a low and powerful goal.

The Stripes waited until the second half of extra time for their next golden opportunity, recieving a penalty for a clear handball. Woman of the match Hazekawa stepped up and converted the penalty to give Birkirkara yet another legendary Champions League night.

Their next opponent will now be Belgian champions Anderlecht this Saturday.
