Moviment Graffitti has come out in support of introducing assisted voluntary euthanasia in Malta, asserting that individuals facing terminal or incurable illnesses should have the right to choose a dignified end to their suffering.

The activist NGO argued that no one, including the state or religious institutions, should impose their beliefs on those making this personal decision.

Their position comes as Malta holds a national public consultation on the legalisation of assisted voluntary euthanasia.

Moviment Graffitti said that while voluntary euthanasia centres on personal autonomy, it is not a decision made in a vacuum.

‘Therefore, it is essential that the introduction of voluntary euthanasia be accompanied by a robust regulatory framework and effective institutions to prevent abuse and unintended consequences.’

‘Additionally, there must be a strong emphasis on ensuring access to high-quality palliative care and comprehensive community support, so that the decision to pursue euthanasia remains truly voluntary and not driven by avoidable circumstances.’

Archbishop Charles Scicluna came out in opposition of AVE, saying that the process of dying is never pleasant and urged instead for palliative care up until a person’s natural death.

He said this position does not make him heartless or an extremist, but said that the narrative synergy between the Church, government and Hospice Malta could push for palliative care that lets a person die their natural death.
