In Valletta, Malta, Salvu Mallia’s Facebook proposition to replace the Queen Victoria monument with a statue honouring Daphne Caruana Galizia has ignited a spirited debate. Mallia’s call for recognition of Caruana Galizia’s contributions has garnered support, but also stirred dissent.

The proposal emerges amidst the recent installation of a temporary monument featuring an empty chair, overshadowing Queen Victoria’s statue. Mallia’s supporters argue that Caruana Galizia’s fearless journalism and pursuit of justice warrant commemoration, while critics emphasize the historical significance of the Queen Victoria monument.

This debate underscores broader discussions about representation and the evolving narrative of Malta’s history. Whether Mallia’s proposal materializes or not, it prompts reflection on the values we choose to uphold as a society and the narratives that shape our collective memory.
