Maltese people are amongst the lightest drinkers in the European Union, according to the 2021 European health report conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
While most European countries consume more alcohol that anywhere else in the world, the WHO’s study puts Malta in second before last, with a total consumption of alcohol per capita among adults standing at 8.3 litres of pure alcohol in 2019. For context, only Italy ranked lower, with a consumption of 8.0 litres.
Meanwhile, Eastern European countries Czechia, Latvia and Lithuania came in the top three with a consumption of 14.3, 13.2 and 12.8 litres respectively.
The study also stated that each year, every European aged 15 and over consumes an average of 9.5 litres of pure alcohol, which equates to approximately 190 litres of beer, 80 litres of wine or 24 litres of spirits.
The study revealed a number of other trends, with the most prevalent being that men drink more than women, with 13.0 per cent of men drinking alcohol every day when compared to the 4.1 per cent of women. Additionally 36.4 per cent of men drink every week, as opposed to the 21.7 per cent of women.
