Maltese nurse beloved by children retires after 50 years of service

Rose Bugeja, a beloved nurse known by many people, particularly children, under her care, has officially resigned after giving 50 years of service to the community.

Rose worked as a nurse at the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre, as well as working in the Rainbow Ward for the past 17 years.

Speaking to TVM News, Rose stated that she is retiring with regret, but revealed that she will continue with voluntary work with Puttinu Cares to help cancer patients.

Rose could have retired around seven years ago, but kept going to help as many patients as possible get through their ordeals.

She had also explained to TVM that when she experiences the death of a child, she snaps out of it by writing a poem, having a good cry and knowing that they they are praying for everyone from heaven.

A few days ago, Health Minister Chris Fearne commemorated Rose’s hard work, describing her as a ‘nurse with a big heart who gave over 50 years of service with dedication and love.’

Rubbish and Cat food in the streets amongst things attracting hornets

During an interview with MaltaDaily, Exterminator Arnold Sciberras explained how, among other things, cat food and other rubbish are some of the main sources attracting hornets.

Arnold explained that, given that these hornets are carnivores, they are attracted to many food remains which could be left along with trash and BBQ leftovers.

However, one of the other main attractions for these dangerous insects is food left for stray cats outside. Feeding stray cats is a very popular practice in Malta, but also a controversial one as many also disagree with the ‘mess’ many leave behind when doing so.

The hornets issue presents a new perspective to the issue as these invasive creatures are thriving on the food being left for cats.

Arnold also explained that to prevent the presence of these hornets, people need to cement up gaps in brick walls and close off ventilators whenever nests are found. He also pointed to the fact that we have created the perfect concrete jungle environment in Malta for hornets to thrive in.

Whenever these hornets are encountered, Arnold encourages those involved to not attempt to deal with the nest themselves and instead contact professionals due to the danger these insects pose.

She worked as an accountant and economist before politics.

Truss was chosen to serve on a London city council in 2006, then in 2010 she was voted to the legislature. She was also the leader of the pro-EU Oxford University Liberal Democrats, a group that is currently advocating for a second Brexit referendum and was raised by left-leaning parents.

Previously supported ‘Remain’ during the 2016 Brexit referendum.

Despite this, she has subsequently stated that she changed her mind on the matter and has advocated for Britain to still utilise leaving the EU as an opportunity to rebuild the economy.

Became meme material due to her comments on cheese.

Truss entered the public eye by becoming a bit of a meme due to her comments about the amount of cheese the country imports in her 2014 conference speech. She talks a lot about cheese in interviews, and in 2018, she joked at a conference that she was forbidden from talking about cheese in that year’s speech.

She worked for oil and gas giant Shell before entering politics.

Receiving her education at Oxford University’s Merton College, she worked as a commercial manager for the oil and gas corporation Shell, before taking the position of economics director at Cable & Wireless.

Her favourite song is ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody’ by Whitney Houston.

Brexit isn’t the only thing she’s changed her mind about as in recent weeks she reveals that she loves 1980s music and has since chosen Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ as her current favourite tune. Back in 2001, she said that her favourite song was ‘I Try’ by Macy Gray.

She used to make miniature gardens for flower shows.

In a 2016 interview with Countryfile magazine, asked about her favourite countryside pursuits, Truss said: “My best memory is when I use to stay with friends and attend their local flower show. I used to love entering my miniature gardens and rock cakes.”

Wants to reduce taxes on income and property to stimulate economy.

As a free market conservative, Truss has said that in order to stimulate the economy, Britain should reduce taxes on income and property purchases as well as simplify the tax code. She also plans on lowering debt as a proportion of GDP and strengthen the role private investment plays in providing infrastructure.

Alex Borg wants police to be more armed

During an interview with Fabian Demicoli in the latest episode of ‘The Interview’ by MaltaDaily, PN shadow minister for Gozo Alex Borg stated that he wanted the police to be more armed and to be offered better conditions in order to make officers feel more safe and attract more people into the force.

He stated that police officers aren’t being offered suitable conditions and are being given low wages in comparison to those offered back in 2020 and before.

Borg also said that the responsibilities and workload for policemen and women have increased this past year. This has not helped the conditions to improve. Instead, even though the workload has increased, the people in charge are not respecting police officers and their work enough.

Borg went on to say that police officers should be more armed in order to make the officer feel safer in their job as well as to scare potential criminals from committing any crimes in the future.
