Jared Micallef delivered a standout performance at the Australian Championships, smashing the national 800m record with a time of 1:46.08. Competing at the WA Athletics Stadium in Perth, Micallef’s time earned him a fifth-place finish in a highly competitive field.

Back on the island, Benjamin Salnitro claimed the national 400m hurdles record at Athletics Malta’s fourth Challenge Meeting. Salnitro clocked 54.66 seconds, surpassing the record set just a week earlier by Jordan Pace.

Thomas Grech also made his mark by claiming the 3000m steeplechase title in a time of 10:33.82, setting new national records in both the Under 23 and Under 20 categories.

Recorded this week as well, four Maltese athletes took on Europe’s elite at the European Running Championships in Leuven, Belgium. Luke Micallef clocked 30:34 in the 10K, while Lisa Bezzina completed the distance in 38:06. Simon Spiteri achieved a personal best of 2:23:47 in the marathon, and Dillon Cassar finished the half marathon in a solid 1:07:45.

“Gender Corrective Mechanism In Malta Has Failed”, Says Metsola

"Gender Corrective Mechanism In Malta Has Failed", Says Metsola
Apr 15 2025 Share

In a statement, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said that the Gender Corrective Mechanism in Malta has failed.

Despite having noble aims, she said, the way it has been implemented means that it is a tool to ‘actively work against women candidates.’

She argued that this was a smokescreen used to ‘manipulate statistics at the expense of women. There are different things we can discuss to improve the situation (gender balanced ballot lists is one idea), but ultimately you should be in Parliament because people voted for you to be there.’

The EP President said that if real difference needs to be made, a mature discussion is needed.

A mature discussion that would tackle why Malta is the only EU Member State without a full-time Parliament, on allowing MPs to have access tor researchers, and on fixing political party financing models ‘in a way that stops Parties competing with charities to raise funds.’

‘If we really want to raise the level of politics in this country, we need to move this discussion away from the point-scoring, tribalism and hyper-partisanship we see at every level.’

Travel social media creator Christian Grossi went viral in his latest video as he shared how he was not expecting to discover that the Maltese drive on the left.

When asked by the car rental distributor whether he’s driven ‘one of these cars’ before, he assumed that he was referring to a manual car.

Entering the vehicle on what, for him, would have been the driver seat, he found no steering wheel – given that it was situated on the right hand side of the vehicle.

‘They drive on the left don’t they’, he asked in a moment of realisation. The video amassed a whopping 2.3 million views, with Grossi himself boasting 1.6 million followers on his TikTok account.
