Uganda marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei,33, has tragically passed away after being set on fire by her former boyfriend in a violent attack last Sunday. Cheptegei, who competed in the recent Paris Olympics, was doused in petrol and set on fire following an argument over land after returning home from church in North-West Kenya.

Cheptegei suffered severe burns and succumbed to her injuries at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret despite medical efforts to save her. Kenyan authorities are investigating the attack, which has drawn widespread condemnation, particularly highlighting the ongoing issue of gender-based violence in Kenya.

The suspect, Cheptegei’s ex-boyfriend, is receiving treatment for less severe burns. Kenya’s Sports Minister and the UN have both condemned the attack, urging action against gender-based violence. Cheptegei leaves behind two daughters, and her family is now grappling with the loss of their breadwinner.

Rest In Peace Rebecca Cheptegei.

Over 40 turtles successfully hatched from the fourth nest of 2024 on their very first night!

The nest, initially discovered on July 16th at Għajn Tuffieħa, had to be relocated due to its proximity to the shore, where it was at risk of being washed away.

This relocation proved successful, as over 40 turtles have now safely made their way to the sea from the nest.
