Maltese Go Kart Driver Races To Victory In Sicily

Ayrton Lee Tonna’s impressive journey to the finals at the Circuito Internazionale Triscina in Sicily saw him compete in the ACI Coppa Di Zona Area Sicilia 2024.

Tonna, a rising talent in the Mini GR3 – Under-10 category, secured victories in the Qualifying, Pre-Final, and Final races, while also setting the fastest lap in both the pre-final and final.

‘I am extremely grateful to my father, Jonathan Lee Tonna, for working tirelessly on my kart; he is the best coach, mentor, and mechanic’, wrote Ayrton on social media.

His outstanding performance earned him a place as a finalist in the ACI Coppa Dei Campioni competition in November, at Circuito Del Sele, near Salerno, Italy.

Late Ġużu Tal-Beżuża Nominated For Gieħ Ir-Repubblika

The Breeds of Origin Conservancy, a non-profit organisation, has nominated Joseph Muscat for a posthumous Ġieħ ir-Repubblika award, honouring him as a national treasure.

Muscat, considered one of the last custodians of the critically endangered Maltese indigenous goat, was deeply respected for his dedication to preserving Malta’s rural heritage.

Darryl Grech, Founder of the Conservancy, described Muscat as an icon of Maltese rural life, admired for his commitment to livestock herding and farming until his passing last Sunday.

Muscat embodied traditional values, maintaining a lifelong devotion to agriculture despite modern changes. His efforts helped preserve the legacy of indigenous livestock and rural traditions in Malta.

Muscat was also a key figure in organising livestock shows, such as Imnarja, and played a central role in launching the Wirja Agrarja in his hometown of Dingli.

His dedication to educating future generations about Malta’s agricultural heritage, especially indigenous goats and sheep, made him a beloved figure within the community. Muscat’s passing marks the loss of a vital link to Malta’s agricultural past.

Grech emphasised that the award would be a small recognition of Muscat’s significant contributions to the agricultural sector and his deep commitment to Malta’s cultural and rural identity.

Israel’s Iron Dome Intercepts Missiles From Iran

On Tuesday evening, Israel successfully intercepted about 180 missiles launched by Iran using its Iron Dome defence system.

The attack followed Iran’s threats to retaliate after the killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah by Israel. The missiles targeted areas including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, with some landing in southern Israel, causing limited damage.

Although no significant destruction occurred, one Palestinian worker in Jericho was killed by shrapnel. Two others sustained minor injuries from missile fragments.

Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari warned that Iran would face “serious consequences” for the attack. Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned Israel of further “crushing attacks” if it retaliated.

The United States had earlier warned of Iran’s impending ballistic missile strike and actively supported Israel’s defence. American naval destroyers also played a role in intercepting some of the missiles.

The White House and U.S. officials condemned the attack, calling it “defeated and ineffective,” but warned Tehran of severe repercussions. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken both stressed the importance of a coordinated response with Israel, labelling the missile strike an unacceptable escalation of tensions in the region.
