PL Top Spot Nominations Close Ahead Of September Elections
Aug 26 2024 Share

With voting set to take place on Friday, September 13, nominations for the Labour Party’s internal elections officially closed on Sunday morning. The voting is set to take place at the National Labour Centre in Malta and the Labour Centre in Sannat, Gozo, with the vote count following immediately after.

Labour MEP Alex Agius Saliba is unopposed for the role of Deputy Leader for Party Affairs, whilst Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg is the sole nominee for the position of Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs. This means that both deputy leadership positions having only one candidate each.

The position of Labour Party President has two contenders: former TVM head of news Norma Saliba and lawyer Alex Sciberras. The elected will be replacing president Ramona Attard, who announced last week that she would not seek re-election. Attard has held the position since July 2020.

Louis Gatt has submitted his nomination for Vice President, whereas when it comes to the role of International Secretary, John Grech and Georvin Bugeja have both been nominated. Architect William Lewis is running for Organisational Secretary. An additional 38 members have been nominated for 12 positions on the Labour Party’s National Executive.

MEP Josianne Cutajar confirmed on Sunday that she would not be running, and Jason Micallef withdrew from the race earlier this month. Lawyer Ishmael Psaila, involved in Joseph Muscat’s Vitals case, also decided not to contest despite indicating interest.

From August 23rd to 25th, Maltese Top Fuel Drag Racing driver Duncan Micallef competed at the Hockenheim Ring in Germany for the 4th round of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship, thrilling over 40,000 spectators.

Earlier in Sweden, Micallef delivered a record-breaking performance at the Tierp Arena, setting a personal best of 3.79 seconds and a European speed record of 321.4 MPH. This placed him at the top of the championship standings with 170 points.

Despite the excitement, the Hockenheim weekend was tough. Micallef posted on social media, saying, “It wasn’t an easy weekend. A lot of tension, and I admit that the fewer the cars we are, the harder it is. Meaning there is no room for mistakes at all.”

He thanked his crew and RFMotorsport, inviting them to join him for the final event in November at the Halfar Dragstrip in Malta. Micallef remains focused on the upcoming championship decider at Santa Pod Raceway.

He also wished his son, Jacob Micallef, good luck for his demanding three weeks of kart racing in the UK, saying, “Stay strong, Jacob. Whatever happens.”

Representing Malta at the highest levels of motorsport, both father and son are determined to prove that, despite Malta’s size, they can compete with the best.
