A team of Maltese doctors and nurses at Mater Dei Hospital, led by Maltese medical consultant Edward J. Despott, successfully performed a groundbreaking procedure, the first of its kind in Malta.
Prof. Despott, an internationally recognized expert in endoscopic intervention, credits his passion for science to his father, who was a physics teacher. He currently leads the endoscopy section at the Royal Free Hospital, one of the largest teaching hospitals in Central London.
Prof. Despott’s expertise also lies in therapeutic colonoscopy, transnasal upper GI endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease and its’ related complications.
TVM News managed to speak to Despott, who following the procedure stated “I am very happy….for the first time in Malta, I carried out this procedure which I myself developed recently at the Royal Free in London.”
Speaking to TVM News, he revealed that this groundbreaking procedure featuring the immersion therapeutic saline endoscopy or site, allows doctors to remove big warts with an instrument without the need of great surgeries.
Prof. Despott was appointed as a visiting consultant at Mater Dei Hospital to continue performing this procedure, with Maltese specialists also receiving training in the process.
He thanked all of the nurses and doctors for the invitation and stated that he was honored to carry out the procedure at Mater Dei.
In recognition of his achievements, the Maltese State honored him with the National Order of Merit last December.
