Maltese companies’ trust in Malta’s courts of justice on the increase

Minister for Justice and Governance Edward Zammit Lewis posted to social media revealing how the trust of Maltese companies in the country’s courts of justice has grown significantly. The trust rating back in 2017 registered at 56% but went down to 52% last year. However, 2021 saw the percentage improve almost tenfold as trust rating scores at 69%, with 27% of companies reporting they do not trust it and 4% remaining uncertain.

The findings were reported by Eurobarometer, which also surveyed other EU countries. Overall, 49% of companies rate the independence of courts and judges in their country as good. Overall, however, there has been a three-point decrease in the proportion of companies that rate the independence of courts and judges in their country as good compared to 2020. Malta still registered a 20 point boost into its companies being more likely to have a positive perception than last year, alongside Estonia and Slovakia.

Marsalforn Waterfront transformed into fully pedestrian zone

A €3 million investment has gone into the Marsalforn Masterplan which transformed the zone’s waterfront into a fully pedestrian area. Prime Minster Robert Abela and Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri inaugurated the project yesterday evening, as the area became a safe space for families to enjoy without any fear of traffic accidents.

The Gozo Minister stated how the government wanted an open space for families to relax with their loved ones across the area. The Menqa area became pedestrianised, with vehicles having limited access except for in exceptional cases such as public transport and specific service times.

A new coastal defence system and pavement are also being constructed. The defence system will keep Marsalforn Bay safe from the sea, along with storm water culverts to flush rainwater and avoid street flooding. The pier will also be rebuilt for fishermen, along with the instalment of a new lighting system.

Prime Minister Robert Abela stated that the government has a clear idea of where Malta will be headed. He emphasised the creation of jobs and economical improvement. Gozo, however, should not simply follow along Malta’s rapid development blindly. He stated that we need to be careful not to repeat any mistakes which happened in Malta in Gozo.

People are selling government vouchers on Facebook

It seems as though not everyone is taking up the opportunity to spend government issued vouchers. Some have taken to online Maltese Facebook groups to advertise their selling of their very own governmental vouches.

One person posted to a Facebook group stating that they are selling blue government vouchers, with 12 in total to sell. They will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis. Some raised queries as to whether selling vouchers online in such a way should be allowed.

The second round of vouchers due to the COVID-19 pandemic were made available for download online. The digitisation of the voucher purchase was, according to Economy and Industry Minister Silvio Schembri, a huge success in introducing the technological aspect of the economy to the Maltese population.

Kanye West breaks Instagram silence before new album release

Rapper Kanye West has been absent from Instagram for around two years. But in the early hours of Tuesday morning July 21st, the rapper released two new posts shared with just a few hours in between. The first post features close-up images of Kanye wearing gold necklaces featuring the names of his children. These are, of course, North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm, who are 8, 5, 3 and 2 respectively.

With more snapshots of the rapper crouching on two metal cylinders in all-black, a second post surfaced featuring Sha’Carri Richardson. Richardson is the athlete who was unable to go to the Olympics after having been reported to have marijuana in her system. The athlete wears headphones and works up a sweat as she listens ‘No Child Left Behind.’ Serving as an advert for his 10th album ‘Donda’ set to be released on July 24th, the rapper’s 5.6 million followers were delighted that the musical force of nature is making his Instagram comeback.
