Starting November 30, 2024, Maltese citizens with ordinary passports can travel to China visa-free for up to 30 days.
This agreement, valid until December 31, 2025, covers purposes such as business, tourism, family visits, exchanges, and transit. Those not meeting the visa exemption criteria must still obtain a visa before traveling.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg, described the development as a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations.
“This agreement reflects mutual trust and a commitment to fostering ties in tourism, business, and cultural exchange. It simplifies travel for Maltese citizens while creating opportunities for deeper cooperation and trade,” Borg stated.
China has also extended this visa-free policy to nine other countries: Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Estonia, Latvia, Japan, and Malta.
This marks the second major agreement between Malta and China within a year.
The first was a memorandum of understanding on exporting bluefin tuna to China, signed during Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg’s official visit to China in November 2023. These developments underline the growing partnership and shared goals between the two nations.
