Maltese artists outraged following Zebbug feast celebration

Maltese artists outraged following Zebbug feast celebration
Jun 14 2021 Share

Following footage which emerged of a mass gathering during a Zebbug feast celebration, local artists took to social media to express their discontent and frustration. Artists pointed out how performers are suffering financially and psychologically due to closure whereas such events are occurring without restriction and any sense of responsibility.

Dancer Warren Bonello took to Facebook to state that ‘whilst [these] people party without masks, uncontrolled […] us #artists sit at home as we aren’t safe to open our theatre, performances and projects.’ Culture Venture founder and director Toni Attard also took to Facebook to compare an empty, struggling theatre against a band club full of people disregarding health protocols.

It was also noted that several ministers and politicians were present during the celebrations. Transport Minister Ian Borg, Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia, Oppostion Leader Bernard Grech and Social Accommodation Minister Roderick Galdes were among those spotted at the band club.

UK made COVID alarm detects virus in crowded areas within 15 minutes

A UK-made COVID alarm has been designed to detect the virus in a crowded room within just 15 minutes. The gadget, the size of a smoke alarm, could be equipped in crowded areas such as classrooms, workplaces and care homes, with a reliability factor of around 98% to 100%.

Developed by Cambridge firm Roboscientific, the gadget has effectively become more reliable than rapid home tests and just as accurate as PCR lab tests. Tracking molecules by people carrying COVID-19, the results are sent to a smartphone within 15 minutes. The gadget is expected to cost around  £5,000, with a handheld version which allows people to scan others in just two minutes is also in development.

Manchester United to play friendly in Malta in 2021

Manchester United to play friendly in Malta in 2021
Jun 14 2021 Share

The United Journal posted to Twitter stating that world renowned Manchester United are due to play a friendly match in Malta. The date is currently pencilled in for August 3rd, but the game could occur behind closed doors. Further information is yet to be disclosed, but the Twitter post did instigate a couple of comments urging Maltese authorities to open up clubs and stadiums in anticipation of the match.

Malta had already signed as the official destination partner for the famous football club in 2019. The agreement was set to run for three years, which therefore includes 2021. The team had already made several appearances in Malta, with their last visit being in 2000 when the team came over for a training camp and played a friendly game against Birkirkara. Games were played in 1967 against Hibernians, 1961 against a Maltese XI selection and 1987 against Naxxar Lions.
