The population of Malta grew from 421,464 in 2012 to 542,051 in 2022, representing a 28.6% increase.
This growth is primarily attributed to the rise in the foreign population, which surged from 23,365 in 2012 to 137,376 in 2022, a five-fold increase. In contrast, the Maltese population increased by only 1.7%, from 398,099 to 404,675 during the same period.
The median age remained at 39 years, but the demographic distribution shifted, with an increase in the share of the population aged 65 and over (17.1% to 18.6%) and a decrease in the share of children aged 14 or under (14.6% to 12.7%). The male population surpassed females, comprising 52.5% in 2022.
Between 2012 and 2022, Malta experienced a total net migration of 117,259 persons, with the highest net migration observed in 2022 (21,798). The foreign population’s share rose from 5.5% in 2012 to 25.3% in 2022, with 69% being non-EU citizens.
The population density increased from 1,337 to 1,721 residents per km², with the Northern Harbour district being the most densely populated.
Crude death rates remained stable, averaging 8 resident deaths per 1,000 mid-year population, while the crude birth rate declined from 10 to 8 resident live births per 1,000 mid-year population.
The total fertility rate decreased from 1.43 in 2012 to 1.08 in 2022. Life expectancy improved, with total life expectancy at birth increasing from 80.9 to 82.3 years, and at age 65 from 19.4 to 20.5 years. Females continue to have higher life expectancies than males.
