Malta makes international headlines after its COVID-19 health measure concerning travelling Britons leaves families distraught. As of Wednesday, travellers from the UK aged 12 and above are only permitted to enter Malta if they show proof of being fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine. Those between ages of 5 and 11 can travel if they accompany their fully vaccinated parents and show evidence of negative PCR tests taken within 72 hours before arrival. However, the UK is not vaccinating under-18s.
The requirement of UK arrivals between ages of 12 and 17 thus becomes an outright ban. One woman from London wrote to the High Commission how a 12-year-old girl is being left distraught as she cannot be a bridesmaid in August.
The situation is made worse according to British High Commissioner to Malta Cathy Ward as authorities revealed they will only be accepting printed letters sent by NHS as proof.
Anyone planning to use the NHS app to demonstrate full vaccination is being turned away at UK airports or on the border to Malta. With Malta placed on the UK’s green list, a surge in demand for holidays on the island was inevitable and noted.
