Bernard Grech Calls for Greater Investment in University Research Facilities

May 30 2025 Share

During a visit to the newly protected Latnija Cave in Mellieħa, Opposition Leader Bernard Grech called for increased investment in the University of Malta’s Department of Archaeology.

He stressed the need for better research and laboratory facilities to support further study of discoveries that place Malta on the global scientific map.

Grech’s visit follows the recent confirmation that Malta’s earliest evidence of human presence—dating back 8,500 years—was found at this site, also known as Għar Tuta.

The discovery pushes back the timeline of human settlement in Malta by over a thousand years and suggests the first inhabitants were hunter-gatherers, not Neolithic farmers as previously believed.

Accompanied by shadow ministers Julie Zahra, Ryan Callus, and Claudette Buttigieg, as well as Mellieħa Mayor Gabriel Micallef, Grech met with Professors Eleonor Scerri and Nicholas Vella, who led the excavation since 2019.

The site is now closed to the public for further research.

Grech praised the researchers’ efforts, comparing the find to Sir Temi Zammit’s discovery of Malta’s Megalithic Temples.

He also highlighted how such findings show the long-term impact of climate change, reinforcing the importance of research and heritage in shaping national identity.

Swimming Not Recommended St.Thomas Bay Due to Water Contamination

May 30 2025 Share

The Environmental Health Directorate within the Superintendence of Public Health has issued a warning advising against swimming in Marsascala’s St.Thomas Bay and Fajtata bay until further notice.

This precaution follows the discharge of foul water from a rainwater culvert that reached the sea, potentially affecting the quality of the bathing water and posing health risks to bathers.

Investigations by Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) identified a nearby restaurant as the source of the contamination.

Appropriate measures have been taken to address and resolve the issue. The affected area is located between site codes A07-Fajtata and A08-St Thomas Bay, marked by an orange line on local maps.

Warning signs have been installed in the area to alert the public, and these will be removed once water quality returns to safe levels. The Directorate will issue another public notice to confirm when the site is safe for bathing again.

For further information, members of the public can contact the Environmental Health Directorate by phone between 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at 2133 7333 or via email at [email protected].

May 30 2025 Share

In a press release Prime Minister Roberta Abela launched the Social Plan for the Family 2025-2030.

This initiative focuses on further improving quality of life for families.

The plan addresses a broad spectrum of priorities, including targeted assistance for vulnerable families, and measures to promote stronger family relationships, particularly by encouraging more quality time together. It also places emphasis on discussions with social partners on extending maternity and paternity leave. Another key pillar of the plan focuses on the holistic education and

healthy upbringing of children, as well as the enhancement of Malta’s fertility rate.

Over the next five years the government will implement more than seventy policy actions, targeted to further support all family units.

Prime Minister Robert Abela noted that the plan marks the first set of targeted measures aimed at enhancing fertility rates. He emphasised that the government is addressing this issue holistically through a range of actions, including improved working conditions, affordable housing, fairer tax rates, enhanced social benefits, a better natural environment for families to enjoy, and improved access to healthcare and medical treatments.

Prime Minister Robert Abela highlighted the ongoing reform of the Family Court, stressing that children should have equal access to both parents, provided it is in their best interest. He underscored the need to preserve and strengthen family ties, even in difficult situations. The Prime Minister also announced plans to support businesses that implement family-friendly workplace practices, aiming to help employees better balance their work and family responsibilities. Referring to Malta Vision 2050, he emphasized the importance of building stronger, more resilient families for the future. He expressed satisfaction that many of the proposed measures are already in progress, with more being incorporated into the upcoming national budget.

Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon explained that the plan aims to address the evolving realities faced by families, including challenges that are not solely financial. He noted, “This policy is the product of extensive work, shaped by the lived experiences of children, adults, and even grandparents, who all play a vital role in raising the younger generation.”
