Malta With 3rd Lowest Road Traffic Deaths In EU 2023

According to data released by Eurostat, Malta had the third lowest rate of road traffic fatalities per million inhabitants in the year 2023.

This would translate to around 15 fatalities per 500,000, which is the approximate population of Malta as of 2025.

The country with the lowest rate was Sweden, with 22 fatalities per million inhabitants, followed by Denmark with 27 fatalities.

Meanwhile, Bulgaria and Romania both registered 81 road fatalities per million inhabitants. Latvia followed suit with 75.

The EU average was 46 fatalities in 2023.

New Visitor Booking System For Blue Lagoon Announced

Starting Thursday, 1st May 2025, a new online booking system will regulate visitor numbers at Comino’s Blue Lagoon to help protect its fragile ecosystem.

This initiative, led by the Malta Tourism Authority in partnership with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism and other stakeholders, is part of a broader plan to boost sustainability and improve the visitor experience at this Natura 2000 site.

The system, themed “Book, Protect, Enjoy,” requires all individuals or groups arriving by private or commercial vessels to pre-book their visit at bluelagooncomino.mt.

Visitors can choose from three daily time slots: 08:00–13:00, 13:30–17:30, or 18:00–22:00.

After entering basic details and an email, users receive a unique QR code to present upon arrival. In exchange, a wristband granting access for the selected time slot will be issued.

Unauthorised access will not be allowed and may incur fines. Previously, the site saw up to 12,000 visitors at once during peak periods. Under the new system, only 4,000 visitors will be allowed at any one time. Staff will assist with the transition during the initial weeks.

This is the first step in a two-year project by Team Blue Lagoon. Further improvements coming in 2025 include expanded swimming zones, enhanced waste management, new sanitation facilities, and tighter enforcement. Consultations on long-term environmental measures will begin soon, with full implementation expected by summer 2026.

Second Chance Horse Rescue, an NGO dedicated to rescuing, advocacy and wellbeing about all things horses, recently took in a, what they deem to be, quite elderly horse.

The NGO were contacted by Animal Welfare and they were met with a possibly 20-year-old horse with an injured front leg and no eye sight.

‘Taking in horses like her is not easy. Sadly, horses who require long term medications and special care often go overlooked’, said the NGO.

However, they vowed to still do everything they can to help her out.

The NGO also opened a new fundraiser for anyone wishing to help out, so that this and other horses can get the help they deserve!

Gozo and Planning Minister Clint Camilleri and Lands and Electoral Manifesto Implementation Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi presided over the official signing of an agreement that transfers land at Pjazza l-Assedju in central Victoria, Gozo, from the Lands Authority to the Ministry for Gozo and Planning.

This agreement enables the launch of a major project that will create a landscaped green space and an underground parking facility aimed at enhancing infrastructure and services in the city centre.

The planned development will add around 2,100 square metres of tree-lined open space and construct a multi-level underground car park offering at least 230 additional parking spaces.

Minister Clint Camilleri highlighted that the project will revitalise Victoria’s core by providing a welcoming open space for families while addressing the long-standing need for more parking.

He stressed that this forms part of a broader vision for Gozo’s sustainable development, aligned with the Gozo Regional Development Strategy and Malta’s national Vision 2050.

Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi noted that this agreement supports a shift in transport infrastructure, offering more convenience for residents and visitors. He underlined the Lands Authority’s role in regenerating public spaces for community use.

In late 2024, the Gozo Regional Development Authority launched a Preliminary Market Consultation on the Victoria Car Park and Green Space project.
