Nominations Open For Animal Honours Awards 2025

Nominations are now open for the Animal Honours Awards 2025, as announced by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Anton Refalo, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said.

The awards aim to celebrate individuals and organisations dedicated to animal welfare, as well as animals that have had a significant impact on people’s lives.

Minister Refalo described the awards as an important opportunity to raise awareness of responsible animal care and to strengthen national commitment to animal welfare.

He also expressed appreciation for NGOs, volunteers, and farmers who work tirelessly to protect animals.

Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said highlighted the importance of recognising the efforts of veterinarians, volunteers, farmers and animal welfare establishments. She noted that this year’s edition will include a new category: ‘Most Innovative School Project for Animal Welfare’, which aims to encourage younger generations to engage with animal protection initiatives.

Both officials thanked the Office of the Commissioner for Animal Welfare for coordinating the awards, and acknowledged the consistent efforts of those involved in the sector.

Nominations will be accepted from Friday 4 July until Friday 18 July. Submissions can be made at https://commissioneranimalwelfare.gov.mt/animal-honours-awards. A jury will select three finalists per category, after which the public will be invited to vote.

Public Works Department Enhances Malta’s Flood Protection Infrastructure

Each year, the Public Works Department collects over 2,400 tonnes of waste from 16 kilometres of underground stormwater tunnels, benefitting around 70,000 residents.

This essential yet often unseen work helps prevent flooding and ensures public safety, especially ahead of the winter season.

During a recent visit to the National Flood Relief Project in Mosta, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia praised the ongoing underground maintenance efforts.

He emphasised the importance of keeping stormwater systems clean and functional, describing it as part of a broader vision for a more resilient and sustainable Malta.

Perit Mario Ellul, Director of the Coastal and Stormwater Unit (CSU), said the government plans to expand the existing network by an additional 4 kilometres, bringing the total to 20 kilometres of key flood infrastructure.

The current system, located up to 25 metres below street level, includes 142 culverts and 94 oil filters that improve water quality before it enters the tunnels.

Beyond tunnel upkeep, the CSU is also building 2.3 kilometres of new culverts and maintaining major watercourses.

Moreover, over 13,000 cubic metres of rainwater were collected from cleaned rural reservoirs this year, helping farmers with irrigation and contributing to national water sustainability efforts.

Youth.inc Awards Celebrate Young Changemakers and Future Leaders

The Youth.inc programme, run by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, recently held a special event, the Youth.inc Awards Night, to celebrate the efforts of young people who have shown dedication and growth, both personally and in their contribution to society.

The evening honoured participants of the Youth.inc programme, which aims to guide young people towards a purposeful and fulfilling future.

It also paid tribute to youth workers and professionals who, through their commitment and passion, create opportunities and safe spaces for development.

Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti praised the values shown by these young individuals, describing them as today’s leaders, not just tomorrow’s.

He highlighted their energy, creativity, resilience, and drive to make a difference. “You are shaping our society with fresh ideas and strong values,” he said.

Azzopardi Tanti reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in youth-focused programmes like Youth.inc, which support the development of active and informed citizens.

He encouraged young people to participate in the Malta 2050 national consultation, reminding them that their voices matter and should be heard.

The event closed with a strong message of hope, recognising the potential of the younger generation to lead meaningful change in Malta’s future.
