Malta to begin accepting US-issued vaccine cards as of Monday

As of Monday, US-issued COVID-19 vaccine cards will start being accepted in Malta, with digital verification to start being recognised as of August 1st.

This was announced by the Health Ministry on Saturday, with United States residents receiving the vaccine card issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Authorities are also working on a system of digital verification to scan and recognise CDC, which will begin operating on August 1st. Further details will be announced in the near future.

Following controversy over general election candidates distributing freebies, a current PL candidate is facing backlash for offering free mathematics private lessons at Labour party clubs.

The country has been engaged in nationwide debate over the practice of Treating, where candidates offer freebies to influence their votes, which is an illegal act under Malta’s General Elections Act.

The Union of Professional Educators expressed its disdain at the situation, going on to state the following: “What does it take to become a professional teacher? Not much, according to Audrey Demicoli, who is an infrastructure Malta official and a PL candidate for the third electoral district.”

The UPE expressed its concern with Demicoli providing lessons without possessing a teacher’s warrant, which they stated is misleading and threatens the state of the educational sector.

The candidate is offering the lessons in the Labour clubs in the district she is contesting however, according to the law, an act such as this can only be considered as ‘Treating’ if it occurs in the period between the election announcement and day of voting.

As local COVID-19 case continue to surge, local establishments have been imposing certain measures and precautions to mitigate or halt the spread of COVID-19.

APS Bank has introduced a new measure which states that vaccinated employees must present a vaccine certificate until the end of July and unvaccinated employees must take a weekly PCR test.

Employees who work 5 days a week must be tested every Friday while those who work a six-day week must be tested on Saturday. If individuals are tested during working hours, the time will be deducted from the employees’ leave.
