In today’s COVID-19 update published on saħħa, it was reported that Malta has 2,000 active cases with a total of 2,041 COVID-19 cases currently active.
Until recently, the Prime Minister had shut down any rumours of a lockdown in Malta ahead of the Christmas season while many other nations across Europe are enacting lockdown measures and curfews.
So far, Malta has registered 7,396 COVID-19 cases, of which, 5,274 have recovered and 81 have died.

Malta has registered 153 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 3,296 swab tests, while 89 patients have recovered. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.
From yesterday’s cases; 15 cases were family members of previously known cases, 2 cases were contact of positive work colleagues, 6 cases were direct contacts with other positive cases, 2 cases were from social gatherings with other positive cases and 4 cases were imported.
To date, Malta has registered 7,396 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 5,274 have recovered, 81 died and 2,041 are still active.
In a statement released by the Ministries for Tourism and National Heritage earlier this morning, it was clarified that no mass events will be held in Valletta or otherwise during Christmas.
The statement revealed that only the main streets will be decorated, with one Christmas tree and a nativity crib to be set up with projections to be made on the Presidential Palace and St. George’s Square.
The statement went on to clarify that the goal was to encourage families to buy gifts for one another, eat at local restaurants and get in the positive Christmas spirit via music, small choirs and performance art.

The Medical Association of Malta has spoken out against the attitude of the Prime Minister and Tourism Minister who, despite the recent increase in deaths and cases, went ahead with the announcement of ‘Christmas in the City’ mass event.
The MAM highlighted Malta’s recent increase in cases and deaths, where the death toll currently stands at 81 with three medical wards in Mater Dei catering exclusively to COVID-19 patients.
While polls and surveys have shown that most Maltese citizens are against lockdown, one cannot ignore the lack of progress being made with regards to COVID-19 as events such as this may contribute to a further surge in cases.
