Maltese football is mourning the loss of one of its greatest ever players, Willie Vassallo, who passed away on 6 April 2025 in Melbourne, Australia, at the age of 75.

The news was confirmed by his brother Angelo via a heartfelt message on social media.

Born in Gżira on 14 September 1949, Vassallo was widely regarded as one of Malta’s finest post-war footballers. His talent emerged early, representing Malta internationally while still a teenager.

He caught the attention of Floriana FC coach Lolly Borg, who signed him after standout performances in the minors’ league.

Vassallo quickly established himself as a dynamic midfielder, known for his tireless energy, precise passing, and goal-scoring ability from deep—drawing comparisons to Paul Scholes.

From 1966 to 1977, he was a key figure in Floriana’s dominant era, winning 19 major honours and captaining both club and country.

He debuted for Malta in 1969 against Luxembourg and delivered a memorable performance at Wembley in 1971 against England, leading a spirited display that exceeded expectations. His peak came in the 1973–74 season when he was named MFA Footballer of the Year.

Vassallo’s move to Australia in 1978 marked the end of a glorious era for Floriana. His legacy endures as a symbol of leadership, passion, and footballing excellence.
