Malta has positioned itself as a leading hub for medical innovation in the Mediterranean, hosting the prestigious International Advanced Endoscopy Masterclass for the first time.
Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed the event, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to delivering excellence in healthcare, research, and medical education.
He described the Masterclass as a milestone for the country, bringing together top global experts in endoscopy to share knowledge and drive innovation.
He also praised the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing and the Malta Tourism Authority for their role in securing the event.
Dr Abela highlighted Malta’s recent advances in endoscopy, including the introduction of the endoscopic submucosal dissection technique for more precise and less invasive procedures. A new endoscopy unit has also been launched at Mater Dei Hospital to expand services for patients.
The Prime Minister paid special tribute to Professor Edward Despott, a world-renowned Maltese specialist who was instrumental in bringing the Masterclass to Malta and now practices at Mater Dei.
Minister Jo Etienne Abela welcomed the event as a significant achievement for Malta’s healthcare system. He noted recent expansions in endoscopy services and the recruitment of Professor Despott, who now provides some of the world’s most advanced procedures locally.
Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef said the event aligns with Malta’s 2050 vision for high-quality tourism, with medical congresses like this adding strong economic and reputation value to the country.
