Malta’s national waterpolo team have once again secured their place in the European Championship finals, beating Portugal with a strong 17-12 win.
This marks the sixth consecutive time Malta have qualified for the tournament, which will be held next year in Belgrade.
After a shaky performance against Ukraine the day before, Malta looked sharper and more confident in this match. The team started quickly, with goals from Jayden Cutajar, Jeremy Abela, Matthew Zammit, and Benji Cachia giving them a 4-0 lead in the first session.
Captain Stevie Camilleri was the standout player once again, scoring four key goals. Goalkeeper Jake Tanti also impressed with several important saves.
Malta led comfortably throughout the game, with strong contributions from players like Jake Muscat, Liam Galea, and Darren Zammit. Portugal closed the gap slightly in the second half, but Malta remained in control and sealed the win.
They now face France to decide who tops the group.
