PN Organises A National Conference About Moving Enterprises Forward Together

Jun 25 2023 Share

Cooperatives have long been hailed as a shining example of how individuals with diverse skills and abilities can come together with a common goal, propelling their enterprise to new heights. This sentiment was strongly echoed by the leader of the Nationalist Party, Bernard Grech, during his address at the conference organised by the Nationalist Party under the theme “Cooperatives in Malta… the way forward.”

Acknowledging the ever-changing nature of situations and challenges, Grech emphasised the importance of regular discussions and meetings on such topics. While advocating for changes in legislation, he stressed that a shift in mentality and the presence of political will are equally crucial for tangible progress.

Grech underlined that true advancement can only be achieved through the collective cooperation of every individual in the country. Without it, the risk of a society where progress is limited to those with privileged connections and opportunities is imminent. He further emphasised the need to uphold and prioritize values as the essence of all endeavors.

The conference also saw a notable address by Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament. Metsola highlighted the significance of unity, which manifests as shared opportunities, increased resources, and a stronger voice. Drawing on the European Union as an exemplary model, she stated that an open and competitive market demands seizing the opportunities to enhance products and surpass conventional practices.

Metsola firmly believed that through enhanced measures and incentives, cooperatives can flourish and continue their growth trajectory. She underscored the urgent necessity for a new economic model in Malta, emphasizing that failure to adopt one would result in stagnation and hardship for workers.

The event, spearheaded by PN Whip Robert Cutjar, the Spokesman of the Opposition for SMEs, the self-employed, and cooperatives, featured various interventions by representatives from the Board of Cooperatives, Cooperatives Malta, the Maltese Federation of Cooperatives, and the Central Co-Operative Fund. Discussions revolved around the expectations of Maltese cooperatives concerning updates to existing cooperative laws, emphasizing the need for immediate action on several fronts.

Attendees comprised numerous cooperative representatives from diverse sectors of society, alongside the Deputy PN Leader, Alex Perici Calascione, and several Nationalist MPs. Adding an international perspective to the conference, a message was also delivered by the General Manager of Barcelona Football Club, a renowned cooperative-managed organization.

The conference served as a platform for cooperative stakeholders to share insights, voice concerns, and advocate for necessary changes. It emphasized the pivotal role cooperatives play in fostering economic development, empowering workers, and driving positive change within communities.
