During the Cannabis Europa Conference in London, which was addressed by MEP Cyrus Engerer, Malta’s model and legislation for the personal use of cannabis was massively praised by the speaker.
This was the largest conference in regards to cannabis legislation, use and science, and was held in London to address the adoption of Malta’s model by other European Member states.
Engerer was the only speaker from Malta during the conference and, in a panel with the leadership of the European Parliament interest group on cannabis for personal use, spoke about how Malta was being considered as the role model in Europe for this legislation.
Engerer highlighted how the ultimate aim of the legislation was that no one is sent to prison for smoking a joint, in the same way that no one is sentenced for drinking alcohol, even excessively, which has far more negative implications on the user’s health.
Engerer explained that for the past months he was being consulted by a number of legislators in Germany on how the Maltese system works, which has led the German government to propose a law based on the Maltese model a few weeks ago, that will lead for Germany to become the second European Union Member State to legalise Cannabis for personal use.
