White paper proposes up to 7 grams cannabis possession & cultivating up to 4 plants

Mar 30 2021 Share

Excerpts from White Paper in regards to cannabis reform have revealed that a decriminalisation of up to 7 grams of cannabis possession and a 4 plant household growth for personal use will come into effect

Government has thus proposed that possession of more than 7 grams but less than 28 grams for one’s exclusive personal use should be subject to proceedings before Commissioner for Justice.

Consumption of cannabis in public will however not be allowed. A €233.33 fine will be administered if this is breached.

Every residential household can thus grow up to 4 plants in a space not visible to the public and that does not allow smells to be emitted. The cultivated cannabis cannot be sold and can be consumed only in the same household. Consumption cannot occur in front of minors.

Malta is set to welcome back tourists to the island starting June 2021 whilst also launching a €20 million worth aid incentive package to aid a ‘bruised’ industry. Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo outlined the plan on 30th March 2021, stating how the recovery scheme will seek to improve the sector due to its heavy impact due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The plan will allow vaccinated tourists to visit the island free of restrictions. They will have to provided a digital ‘green passport’, whereas unvaccinated tourists will still be able to submit negative PCR COVID-19 tests taken hours before travelling. The UK has been highlighted as one of the country’s most important source markets, being also a country with a high vaccination rate. Bartolo said that while global tourism collapsed, ‘Malta made sure it worked more than ever to ensure connectivity remains a priority.’
