Malta national football team coach Michele Marcolini has been dismissed from his role, as announced by the Malta Football Association (MFA) on Friday.
Marcolini, appointed in January 2022 after Devis Mangia’s departure, had been tasked with leading the national team to promotion in the UEFA Nations League.
In addition to managing the men’s senior team, he oversaw other national squads within the MFA.
Despite his contract running until December 31, 2024, the team’s performance, particularly a 2-0 defeat to Moldova last week, reportedly led to his dismissal.
Although Malta secured a 1-0 win over Andorra on Tuesday, keeping their UEFA Nations League hopes alive, the MFA decided to terminate Marcolini’s contract due to recent results.
Assistant coach Davide Mandelli was also relieved of his duties. The MFA expressed gratitude for both coaches’ contributions during their tenure, and further announcements about replacements will follow after the next Executive Board meeting.
Malta’s next match in the UEFA Nations League is scheduled for October 13, where they will face group leaders Moldova at the National Stadium in a crucial encounter.
