The Malta Men’s Rugby Sevens National Team has reached a major milestone by earning promotion to the Rugby Europe Sevens Trophy Division—the second-highest of five tiers in European rugby.
Just three years ago, the team had climbed out of Conference 2, making this rise all the more impressive.
Ranked lowest in their pool, Malta began their campaign with a narrow 24–17 defeat to Serbia. They quickly recovered, beating Finland 27–10 with a confident and composed display, then edging past Austria 27–21 in a thrilling contest that highlighted their determination and skill.
Finishing second in their group secured Malta a semi-final clash against tournament hosts Andorra—who had recently beaten Malta at the GSSE.
This time, Malta turned the tables with a tactical masterclass, sealing their promotion. In the final, Malta faced Monaco, the GSSE gold medallists.
Though they fell short, their runner-up finish confirmed their place among Europe’s rising rugby nations.
“This is a tremendous achievement,” said MRFU President Robert Portelli. “It validates years of hard work and reflects the strength of our growing player base.”
Meanwhile, Malta’s Women’s 7s side also showed promise, claiming three wins over Bulgaria, Estonia, and Lithuania. “There’s still work to be done,” Portelli added, “but the commitment and potential are clear.”
