Malta in first place for most vaccinated people over 80

Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne announced that Malta is currently in first place for most vaccinated people over 80 years of age in Europe. 95% in that age gap has been vaccinated, followed by Ireland at 94% with the rest rating below 88%.

The Minister also encouraged other people to receive the vaccine to continue the mitigation and to protect oneself along with their loved ones. Other countries in Europe vary in their vaccine rollout from Spain at 71%, Germany at 56% and Italy at 52%.

No COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours

No new deaths due to COVID-19 were reported today on 6th of April 2021. This marks the first time in approximately since 8th March that Malta experienced zero deaths due to the pandemic. This news is reported as ITUs are having their pressures eased off as COVID-19 patients requiring immediate care decreases.

64 new COVID-19 cases were reported today, with active cases standing at 528. The vaccine rollout also continues alongside the health measures, with 219,161 doses administered, of which 60,096 were second doses. The decrease in numbers suggests an easing of measures but Prime Minister Robert Abela stated that the reopening plan will not be aggressive but methodical and cautious.

‘Government will not experiment with people’s lives’ says Clayton Bartolo

Interviewed on TVAM, Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Clayton Bartolo stated that the government will not experiment with people’s lives as summer approaches and the question of mass events becomes more imminent. The Minister was asked whether alternative approaches to events were being considered, such as those tested in Holland.

Bartolo answered that the government’s formula is focused on the safety of all. The aim, as pointed out by the Minister, is to start to regrow the economy gradually and responsibly. Today, the MTA also shut down any rumours about large commercial parties which were circulating about large commercial parties.

New COVID-19 strain discovered in Brazil three times deadlier for younger people

A new COVID-19 variant has been discovered sweeping across Brazil that is allegedly three times deadlier for younger people than any previous strain. Known as P1, the variant is 150% more infectious than regular COVID-19. Seemingly spreading faster among younger people in Brazil, the variant has caused 565% of people in their 30s testing positive since January.

Those who contract this new strain are not only more likely to be young, but are also more likely to die because of it. Daily deaths in Brazil due to COVID-19 has surpassed more than 3000 a day. Harvard epidemiologist Dr Eric Liang Feigl-Ding stated that variant P1 could be the variant that is the ‘big troublemaker for the next surge.’
