Malta hosted the 18th European Regional Conference of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP), marking the first time the country has held this significant event. The conference, attended by prosecutors from across Europe and beyond, aimed to foster collaboration and share best practices in the pursuit of justice.
In his opening address, Minister for Justice and Construction Sector Reform Jonathan Attard welcomed delegates and highlighted the importance of the IAP as a platform for discussing the evolving challenges in the legal sector. He emphasized the value of exchanging ideas to improve the work of prosecutors and strengthen judicial integrity.
Minister Attard also outlined Malta’s advancements in prosecution, including the establishment of the State Attorney’s Office in 2019, which has streamlined legal proceedings and improved the handling of serious criminal cases. He noted that the number of prosecutors has increased from 18 in 2019 to 70 by September 2024. Ongoing reforms in the Justice sector, such as the creation of assigned magistrates and planned procedural improvements, were also highlighted.
Attard concluded by thanking participants for their dedication to justice and commended Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg for her contributions on the international stage.
