MEP Thomas Bajada Cals For New Sustainable Economic Model For Europe

MEP Thomas Bajada Cals For New Sustainable Economic Model For Europe
Nov 11 2024 Share

MEP Thomas Bajada has called on nominated Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis to create an economic model for Europe that prioritises environmental standards and sustainable well-being over short-term profit.

Speaking at a European Parliament hearing organised by the ECON and JURI Committees, Bajada emphasised the need to balance long-term social prosperity with economic goals. He highlighted the role of Eurostat in providing essential data, which he argued is crucial for shaping informed, impactful policies.

“We need to bridge the gap between economic metrics that prioritise immediate profits and those that secure our collective future,” said Bajada, urging for data-driven decision-making to support sustainable economic policies.

In response, Dombrovskis expressed willingness to expand Eurostat’s statistical measures if needed but stopped short of making concrete commitments, a gap that Politico Europe pointed out.

Bajada, agreeing with the critique, pledged to keep this issue at the forefront once the new Commission is in place.

Beyond economic sustainability, Bajada addressed other urgent matters, pressing Commissioner Roswall on water resilience in vulnerable island regions and asking Commissioner Kadis about illegal and unregulated fishing practices and third-country aggression in the Mediterranean.

Rita Ora Pays Tribute To Liam Payne At MTV EMAs

Rita Ora Pays Tribute To Liam Payne At MTV EMAs

At the MTV Music Awards, stars from around the world paid tribute to Liam Payne, the former One Direction member who tragically died at 31.

Host Rita Ora, fighting back tears, honoured Payne, describing him as having “the biggest heart” and being “the first person to offer help in any way he could.” She shared that he “brought so much joy to every room he walked into,” leaving a lasting impact on those around him.

Payne died on October 16 after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Following his death, three individuals have been charged: a person close to him, a hotel employee, and a suspected drug dealer.

Argentinian prosecutors accused them of “abandonment of a person followed by death” and “supply and facilitation of narcotics.”

Authorities reported that Payne was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time, and a post-mortem examination confirmed that he died instantly from multiple traumas and haemorrhaging.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Argentina continues to investigate, officially labelling the case as an “inconclusive death.”
