Despite a 3-1 defeat against Russia, Malta showed encouraging signs during the match. Russia scored two goals midway through the first half with Joseph Mbong scoring an amazing goal for Malta during the 56th minute. The Maltese played with a battling spirit during the match despite Russia winning the opening World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium on Wednesday.

Devis Mangia’s team continued to push forward, with only two brief moments of hesitancy in defence that allowed for Russia’s first two goals. The team however showed immense promise, especially as the trip to Slovakia approaches, showing them to be ready to take things up to the international level. Despite the defeat ending the seven-win streak, Malta’s team gave it their all as they continue on in their qualifying matches.
