'Malta Day' At Old Trafford For Over 74,000 Football Fans

Malta Day achieved significant success at Old Trafford on 19 January during Manchester United’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Organised by VisitMalta in partnership with Manchester United, the event showcased Malta’s rich culture and tourism offerings to over 74,000 fans at the stadium and the Greater Manchester community.

Malta’s presence extended beyond the stadium, with impactful branding displayed at key locations like Manchester Piccadilly Station and the Arndale Shopping Centre.

At Old Trafford, VisitMalta advertisements dominated perimeter boards, screens, and digital platforms, ensuring high visibility. Fans engaged in interactive campaigns with opportunities to win Malta-themed prizes, including free holidays to the islands.

VisitMalta also featured prominently at the Destinations: The Holiday & Travel Show in Manchester from 16–19 January. Highlights included a live Maltese cuisine demonstration on 17 January, where visitors sampled traditional dishes and beverages.

Malta Day at Old Trafford further immersed attendees with local delicacies served during the event.

The presence of Manchester United legend Denis Irwin and Malta’s High Commissioner Prof. Stephen Montefort added to the excitement, fostering cultural exchange.

VisitMalta CEO Carlo Micallef emphasised the importance of this collaboration in promoting Malta as a premier destination, leveraging Manchester United’s global reach to inspire travel and cultural exploration.

57,000 Tonnes Of Waste Cleared In 2024 BY CMD

The Cleaning and Maintenance Division (CMD) resolved 96% of reported cases in 2024, showcasing its dedication to maintaining cleanliness across Malta and Gozo.

The division collected a staggering 57,600 tonnes of waste, including 46,000 tonnes of construction debris. Notably, 40,000 tonnes were cleared from the Motorsports Centre to prepare for new projects.

This success stemmed from an €11 million investment in machinery and the tireless efforts of CMD staff. Over the year, CMD handled 20,218 reports of littering and maintenance issues.

Most reports were submitted via the Clean & Upkeep app (10,945), phone (6,191), and email (2,422).

The Xummiemu educational campaign significantly boosted public participation, with app downloads rising from 842 before the campaign to 3,216 after its launch. Minister Miriam Dalli praised the teamwork and public engagement, emphasising that cleanliness is essential to environmental awareness.

Parliamentary Secretary Glenn Bedingfield reaffirmed the government’s commitment to cleanliness, announcing plans to leverage artificial intelligence for future initiatives.

He highlighted the direct link between cleanliness and quality of life, stressing the role of citizens in maintaining public spaces.
