Wasteserv’s Cutting-Edge Glass Sorting Line Nearing Completion

Wasteserv’s Cutting-Edge Glass Sorting Line Nearing Completion
Apr 30 2024 Share

WasteServ is on the brink of completing its new automated glass sorting line, a significant advancement in Malta’s dedication to sustainable waste management. This highly sophisticated sorting line, nearing the end of its commissioning phase, boasts the capability to process approximately 10 tonnes of glass per hour, equivalent to around 52,500 glass bottles. This substantial increase will elevate WasteServ’s annual operational capacity from 8,000 to 21,000 tonnes. Environment Minister Miriam Dalli, accompanied by WasteServ CEO Richard Bilocca, inspected the site to witness the plant’s ongoing progress.

Minister Dalli emphasized the importance of the over €2.5 million investment in advancing towards a circular economy. Not only will this new sorting line significantly augment current operational capacity, but it will also yield superior-quality glass for new product creation. The plant is adept at processing various glass types, including flat glass such as window panes, broadening the range of glass diverted from landfills. Through cutting-edge technology and automated sorting equipment, contaminants are eradicated, and glass is sorted by colour, resulting in higher-grade material.

CEO Richard Bilocca elaborated that the end product, post-elaborate processing, will be ‘furnace-ready’ material. This streamlines manufacturing processes, allowing manufacturers to promptly reintegrate recycled glass into their operations, yielding recycled bottles and jars. The plant, located at the Sant’Antnin facility in Marsascala, aligns with the strategic decision to downsize operations and repurpose 24,000 square metres of land into a public recreational green park. The plant’s development is part-financed by EU funds.
