Malta and EU Nations Donate Half a Million Mpox Vaccine Doses To Africa

Sep 5 2024 Share

On August 14th, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Mpox (Clade 1) outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). This came after the Africa CDC (Centres for Disease Control) had already classified the outbreak as a public health emergency of continental security in Africa.

In response to a request for international assistance, Malta joined forces with the EU’s ‘Team Europe’ initiative, led by DG HERA, to donate vaccines and mobilize resources to help contain the public health crisis. Laurent Muschel, Director-General of HERA (Health Emergency Preparedness and Response), recently arrived in Kinshasa, Congo, to deliver the first shipment of Mpox vaccine doses.

Approximately half a million vaccines are being donated by countries participating in this initiative.

LifeCycle Malta Sponsors Lourdes Pilgrimage to Support Kidney Patients

Sep 5 2024 Share

The LifeCycle Malta Foundation recently sponsored a trip to Lourdes for a group of chronic kidney disease patients, who joined the annual pilgrimage organized by Assoċjazzjoni Volontarji Lourdes.

The trip, supported by the Renal Unit at Mater Dei Hospital, has been sponsored by the Foundation since 2000, recognizing the spiritual and emotional benefits for participants.

As Malta’s only non-profit focused on kidney health, the Foundation aims to provide hope and respite to renal patients. Accompanied by medical staff and volunteers, the group visited the Grotto of Massabielle and participated in prayer services, among other activities.

The pilgrimage also offers a rare opportunity for kidney patients to travel abroad, with all medical needs, including dialysis, carefully managed by the Foundation and the hospital’s Renal Unit.

Since its founding in 1999, the LifeCycle Malta Foundation has raised nearly €4 million, primarily through events like the LifeCycle Challenge and LifeWalk.

The 2024 challenge, titled “Journey of Good Hope,” will involve 16 participants cycling 2,000 kilometers from Botswana to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa over ten days.

The team will depart Malta on October 25. The challenge is supported by main sponsor Nescafé, along with Smart Technologies Ltd, APS Bank, Laferla Insurance, The Web Ally, Agora, and JPA.

Maltese Drag Racer Duncan Micallef Shines In European Championship

Sep 5 2024 Share

From Thursday, September 5th, through Sunday, September 8th, Top Fuel Dragster driver Duncan Micallef will compete at Santa Pod Raceway in the UK for the Euro Finals, the fifth and final event of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship.

Micallef has dominated the championship from the start, breaking two significant records—his personal best and the title of the fastest driver in Europe.

Last month, Micallef delivered a stunning performance during the third round of the FIA European Drag Racing Championship at Tierp Arena in Sweden, where he not only broke his personal record but also set a new European speed benchmark.

With a career-best time of 3.79 seconds and a European speed record of 321.4 MPH, he continues to hold the championship lead with 227 points. However, he faces tough competition from Sweden’s Susanne Callin, who trails with 192 points, and Switzerland’s Jndia Erbacher, who sits in third place with 168 points.

As Micallef eyes the title in the final round at Santa Pod, the pressure is on to maintain his lead and solidify his place at the top of European drag racing.

Meanwhile, his son, Jacob Micallef, is also competing in the UK, participating in the 5th and final round of the Euro Series 2024, Champions of the Future. Jacob is racing at the renowned PF International Karting Circuit, the largest outdoor karting track in the UK.
