Major investments are underway in Gozo to improve water quality and supply reliability, particularly at the Reverse Osmosis Plant in Ħondoq and the Ta’ Ċenċ Reservoirs.
During a recent visit to the sites, Ministers Miriam Dalli and Clint Camilleri, along with Water Services Corporation CEO Karl Cilia, reviewed ongoing works and upcoming projects. One of the key upgrades includes the installation of a new €2 million desalination train at the Ħondoq plant, aimed at increasing production capacity to meet the island’s growing demand.
Minister Dalli noted that economic growth in Gozo is driving the need for more water. She explained that this increase in water supply must be matched by improved wastewater management. A €25 million upgrade to the sewage treatment plant is planned to ensure long-term environmental sustainability.
Minister Camilleri emphasised that the combination of projects at Ħondoq and Ta’ Ċenċ will enhance the resilience and quality of Gozo’s water supply. A new system now connects the Ta’ Ċenċ reservoirs, improving operational flexibility.
Karl Cilia added that these projects form part of a wider strategy, including a new water polishing plant. This facility will treat wastewater to high standards for agricultural use, ensuring a more consistent and sustainable water source for farmers in Gozo.
