Lydia Abela Attends Fashion For Development in New York

At the behest of Evie Evangelou, the founder of Fashion For Development, Dr. Lydia Abela, attended the event that was organised in conjunction with the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, and it carried a profound message encapsulated in its theme: ‘Healthier People, Healthier Planet.’

Dr. Abela’s emphasised the inseparable bond between human health and the environment, and how it is a fundamental truth that should consistently guide our decision-making processes.

Dr. Abela, in her address, alluded to the stark realities that have unfolded when we neglect our environmental responsibilities. Among these realities, she highlighted the issue of climate change. The catastrophic consequences of rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation have underscored the urgency of safeguarding our planet.

She also highlighted how the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as conflicts and wars, have left different scars on all human societies. Dr. Abela recognised that these challenges, including climate change, must serve as a call for courageous decisions.

Metsola Addresses World Leaders Forum By Columbia University

The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola attended the opening of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. 

During a visit that commenced on Saturday, President Metsola addressed the World Leaders Forum organized by Columbia University. In her speech, she pushed for a human-centric approach in all decisions taken, while mentioning that Europe needs to reboot and reform.

This Forum was also attended by a number of Maltese young people who are currently in New York. Roberta Metsola was also one of the main speakers at the Concordia Summit, engaging in a conversation with the former President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, where she spoke about Europe’s role in the world. 

During her visit, President Metsola visited the new Headquarters of Malta’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, where she was welcomed by the Maltese Minister for Foreign Affairs Ian Borg and the head of the Maltese Mission in the United Nations, Vanessa Frazier. 

On behalf of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola also received recognition from the World Jewish Congress and the Jewish community in New York for her personal and the institution’s commitment to fight anti-semitism. 

She also visited the memorial dedicated to the victims of terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001, together with the son of one of the victims – who as a fire captain had lost his life while trying to save others.

During her visit to New York, Roberta Metsola was invited by international newspaper New York Times to visit its headquarters and participate in a discussion on global challenges together with the Chairman of the company along with editors and journalists.

Giving his first ever speech in the Maltese Parliament, MEP Cyrus Engerer took the opportunity to thank and praise PN MPs Claudette Buttigieg and Graziella Attard Previ for their work with the LGBTIQ+ community.

The two PN MPs had been called ‘irrelevant’ for joining the EuroPride March last weekend, but Engerer used his speech to say that they were not irrelevant due to their contributions. 

‘I hate the Maltese partisan political sphere’, wrote Engerer. ‘I do sometimes fall in the trap too, although I fight it as much as possible.’

‘In my first ever speech in the Maltese parliament I thanked and praised PN MPs Claudette Buttigieg and Graziella Attard Previ for their important contribution to equality.’ 

He went on to explain how the two MPs were attacked and ridiculed for their participation, going on to say that he ‘salutes them for having always been there – sometimes behind the scenes others upfront. They have a very important role to play – we need to get in our side all of those that they could easily convince.’

Kruiven Breaks Record For Longest Distance By Youngest Boy

Kruiven Farrugia, the 9 year old boy who ran to raise awareness for Dar Bjorn, was awarded by The Malta Records for being the youngest boy to run the longest distance in Malta. 

Kruiven ran 6 kilometres in 23 minutes and 20 seconds at the age of nine and 102 days in a fundraising run on the 7th of June 2023. 

The record was awarded to the young runner at Dar Bjorn in the presence of ALS activist Bjorn Formosa himself, who was always there to support Kruiven and thank him for his dedication. 

This comes ahead of the fundraising marathon on the 24th of September, which will continue to raise money for those suffering with ALS and other diseases so that they can have the support they need at Dar Bjorn’s homes.
