Lufthansa aircraft from Malta lands in Palermo due to emergency

A Lufthansa aircraft which departed Malta on Tuesday night had to conduct an emergency landing in Palermo due to a discrepancy in one of the engines. 

The flight departed the Luqa airport on Tuesday evening being Frankfurt bound. However, the pilots diverted to Palermo’s Falcone & Borsellino Airport in Sicily just after a few minutes. 

Pilots requested the emergency landing after an unspecified discrepancy was identified in one of the aircraft’s two engines. Flight LH1311 landed in Palermo at 2010hrs, and no incidents or critical issues among the passengers were reported. 

Passengers were flown to their destination via a replacement aircraft. The incident was also reported in the Sicilian regional newspaper La Sicilia.

Taking to social media, Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo revealed that following consultations with the Naxxar Local Council and Infrastructure Minister Aaron Farrugia, the application to keep a particular zone in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq an area for caravans has been annulled.

The Minister said that this form part of a holistic strategy which aims to achieve the following goals:

  • Limit the potential conflicts between the use of the space for recreational purposes
  • To control the environmental impacts on the particular zone 
  • A change to specific sites which goes beyond structured activity 

This follows a statement by the Naxxar Local Council on the 11th of July which raised concerns over the caravan site of the Naxxar coast. 

‘Is this they type of caravan site Infrastructure Malta is aiming for our beautiful Naxxar Coast’ the statement asked. ‘Can’t we do better?! Oh sorry, they are proposing an improvement. Mobile toilets!’

‘Photos showing just a part of the situation this morning next to a site which IM applied with the PA to implement a temporary caravan site which dos not include any amenities except for mobile toilets.’ 

‘We appeal to IM to suspend the application and get together to discuss a proper caravan site deserving to Naxxar and Malta.’

Maltese wonderkid Lucas Caruana set to join Serie A side Sampdoria

Maltese youngster Lucas Caruana has reportedly agreed to a deal to join Serie A side Sampdoria. Caruana has been attracting interest from numerous clubs around Europe, but it was the Blucerchiati who managed to sway the local player to sign with them.

The local talent will fly to Italy this Wednesday and will form part of the primavera (youth) team of Sampdoria.

Throughout last season, and even before that, the young midfielder has had various trials with many European clubs such as Portuguese teams Boavista, SC Braga and fellow Italian teams AC Monza and AS Roma.

These past couple of weeks have been very good for Caruana as, just last week, he made his Champions League debut for boyhood club Hibernians. He came on in the dying minutes of the game as the Paolites were unfortunately losing 3-0. Last season also saw him make his BOV Premier League debut in Hibernian’s final match against Gżira United.

His outstanding talents have also been noted by Maltese national coach Devis Mangia who has invited the dynamic midfielder to training sessions with the senior team on numerous occasions.

Taking to Facebook, Sport Malta Chief Executive Mark Cutajar expressed his disappointment at finding the National Swimming Pool dressing rooms in Qroqq vandalised. 

The images showed everything from doors broken off their hinges as well as massive chunks of mirrors broken and dumped into sinks. 

‘BeActive  – SportMalta would like to show disappointment for the member or members who vandalised the dressing rooms at the National Pool Complex – Malta’ said Cutajar.

‘Our employees do all their effort  to keep the pool up to scratch and these actions really put all of us down’ he said. ‘Dressing rooms will have to be closed until further notice.’

No information in regards to the people behind the vandalism has as of yet been released.
