Malta Beat Israel To Finish In 17th Overall Place

Malta Beat Israel To Finish In 17th Overall Place

Malta concluded their participation in the World Aquatics U-16 Championship with a triumphant 11-8 victory over Israel, showcasing an impressive comeback.

Known for their slow starts, as seen in previous matches against South Africa and Turkey, Malta fell behind 7-4 in the penultimate session. However, their resilience and fighting spirit shone through as they rallied to win the game.

This match tested the character of the young Maltese team, demonstrating their ability to overcome a poor start and finish strongly. Under the leadership of Karl Izzo, the ASA is committed to nurturing grassroots talent, and the team’s performance indicates a promising future for Maltese water polo.

Malta began shakily, conceding two early goals but equalized through Sam Engerer and Philip Tabone. Israel then pulled ahead 4-2, maintaining their lead thanks to four goals from Yuval Gal On. Despite being down 6-4 at halftime, Malta’s determination never wavered.

Goals from Max Lanzon and Miguel Cassar narrowed the gap, and Lanzon eventually tied the game 8-8 with a top-corner bounce shot.

In the final session, Sean Mifsud scored twice to give Malta their first lead, and Shailon Cutajar Casha secured the victory with his third goal, capping off a man-of-the-match performance.

€31 Million Worth Of Cannabis Hidden In Industrial Ovens

On Monday, customs officials reported discovering €13 million worth of cannabis resin concealed within industrial ovens inside a container at the Malta Freeport Terminal.

The container, originating from Morocco and destined for Tripoli, Libya, was flagged for inspection following a risk assessment.

Initial scans of six induction ovens within the container revealed significant anomalies. Subsequent scans confirmed the presence of irregular material hidden inside the ovens.

According to a customs statement, extracting the drugs was a complex process that took over two days and involved customs canine teams, the police narcotics squad, and members of the Civil Protection Department.

Upon dismantling the panels, officials found 4,300 kilos of cannabis resin embedded in the ovens’ inner compartments. Customs described this as a “remarkable find” not only due to the substantial quantity, which is significant even on an international level, but also because of the sophisticated methods used to conceal the drugs.

In a separate incident last week, customs intercepted 50 kilos of cocaine in a container arriving from Ecuador, destined for Slovenia. Duty magistrates have been informed of both cases, and inquiries have been appointed.
